At ETHGlobal Prague, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed ambitious plans for Ethereum’s Layer 1 blockchain to scale approximately tenfold within the next 12 months. This significant upgrade aims to increase transaction capacity while maintaining a careful balance with decentralization.
Buterin explained that after the scalability improvements, the network will enter a pause period. This break will allow developers and the community to assess decentralization metrics and refine the system before the next major upgrade.
“We should scale L1 about 10x over the next year and a bit,” said Buterin during the event.
He emphasized the importance of a gradual and safe scaling approach, noting that increasing block sizes at Layer 1 will provide more room for Layer 2 solutions to operate securely and efficiently. This, he explained in a separate conversation with cLabs CTO Marek Olszewski, will strengthen the overall Ethereum ecosystem.
Despite this promising news, Ethereum’s native token ETH showed only minor price movement recently, trading just above $2,500 with a slight 0.03% gain. Still, ETH remains roughly 10% below its monthly high.
The upcoming upgrade marks a major milestone in Ethereum’s roadmap, underlining ongoing efforts to make the blockchain more scalable and sustainable for future growth.
